Bigger Than the Narrative

Bigger Than the Narrative

Illustration: Arnold Lobel

This is an Illustration by Arnold Lobel. But you knew that already! I have always thought of illustration as a form of visual communication that is simple and direct in a way that fine art often is not. When I am looking at illustrations in books, I see that communication as very closely tied to the idea of narrative. Arnold Lobel has had a piece of my heart since very early childhood, because....look what happens when you remove one of his illustrations from the narrative. It stands on its own as something bigger than the story it was created for. There is something here that is universal and beyond any need for explanation or narration.
