Juneteenth, 2018, I have found myself searching the forests of Maryland for the history of our country. I see nature reclaiming what shame, malice and the passage of time have already all but erased from our collective memory: a foundation built on the backs of unfree people torn from their homeland. But I also find an undeniable joy in this exploration and discovery. I know that we can--we will--not only remember, but learn to honor the truth about our history in deeply meaningful, tangible ways.
